Vice President of Nigeria, Senator Kashim Shettima, has declared that the timely implementation of the Special Agro-Industrial Processing Zones (SAPZ) programme will spark an industrial revolution in the nation’s agriculture sector, driving innovation, job creation, and inclusive economic growth.

Speaking through the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Senator Abubakar Kyari, at the official groundbreaking of the SAPZ project in Ijaiye, Ibadan, Oyo State, the Vice President emphasized that the programme is a strategic intervention designed to position Nigeria as a key player in global agro-industrial markets.

“We are laying the foundation for agro-industrial hubs that will empower agro-processors and farmers, stimulate local economies, and make Nigeria globally competitive,” Shettima stated.

He described SAPZ as a “bold declaration” of the nation’s commitment to transforming its vast agricultural resources into value-added products that will fuel industries, generate employment, and uplift rural communities.

According to the Vice President, the initiative is central to the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, which aims to restore the country’s dignity, unlock its untapped potentials, and create inclusive opportunities for all Nigerians.

“This is more than just an infrastructure project. It is a testament to our unwavering commitment to a future built on strategic partnerships, innovation, and shared prosperity,” he added.

Shettima credited the success of the SAPZ programme to a strategic partnership between the Federal Government, state governments, and key international development institutions, including the African Development Bank (AfDB), the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), and the Islamic Development Bank (IsDB).

He also commended the Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, for his leadership and commitment to the development of the state, describing the groundbreaking event as “a symbol of unity and collaboration crucial for national progress.”

Recounting his recent participation in the United Nations Food Systems Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the Vice President revealed that he represented President Tinubu to showcase the SAPZ as Nigeria’s flagship investment programme. During the summit, Shettima held bilateral talks with IFAD President Dr. Alvaro Lario to seek additional funding to expand the initiative across more states.

“This collaborative effort underscores our belief that sustainable agricultural development is only achievable through unity, innovation, and shared responsibility,” he said.

Shettima announced plans to scale up the SAPZ initiative to all 36 states of the federation. In partnership with AfDB, 27 additional states will be onboarded in phases, beginning with 10 states by the first quarter of 2026, subject to financing agreements with development partners.

The event’s highlight was the symbolic flag-off of the SAPZ project, jointly performed by Minister Abubakar Kyari and Governor Seyi Makinde.
